3. What is Silvilculture?

Silviculture can be defined as the art and science of the development and maintaining the forests stand based on the silvics knowledge applications. It is the theoretical and practical exercise of controlling the composition, structural and growth of the forests

4. Types of silvilculture treatments in Forests Management System in Peninsular Malaysia?

  • Forests Inventory After Harvested (Post-F);
  • Cutting Lianas (CL); and
  • Enrichment Planting

5. What is the definition of Biodiversity?

Biodiversity can be defined as the variability among living organisms from all sources, including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems, and the ecological complexes of which they are part: this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.

6. Definition of Ex-situ conservation

Ex-situ conservation is the maintenance of species outside their natural habitats in other facilities such as arboreta, zoological gardens, seed gene banks, in vitro gene banks and field gene banks.

7. Definition of In-situ conservation

In-situ conservation is the maintenance of plants and animals in their natural habitats, within its natural ecosystems to maintain breeding populations of flora and fauna.

8. What is the definition of Etnobotany?

Etnobotany can be defined as activity of recording, describing and explaining the complex relationship between culture and plants (used); with main focus, on how plants being used, managed and valued across the human community (e.g; as in food, medicines, rituals, cosmetics, colourings, clothing: i construction: as tools: as money:: in literature and in community livelihood.

9. Definition of Enrichment Planting

Planting in an area with native species or commercial species to enrich the area and such remedial action may not affect the residual stands.

10. National Park

“National Park” means a National Park established under section 3 National Parks Act 1980 for preservation and protection of wild life, plant life and objects of geological, archaeological, historical and ethnological and other scientific and scenic interest and through their conservation and utilization to promote the education, health, aesthetic values and recreation of the people.

11. Forest State Park

Forest State Park is an area located within the permanent reserve forests gazetted under the National Forestry Act 1984 Section 10 (1) (l) used for the purpose of preservation of the High Conservation Value Forest, conduct research, education and conservation of flora and fauna.

12. Amenity Forest

Amenity Forest is an area located within the permanent reserve forests gazetted under the National Forestry Act 1984 Section 10 (1) (i) used for recreational purposes such as relaxation, sports, research and education, and preserving the flora and fauna.

13. Recreational Forest

Recreational Forest is any area located outside the permanent reserve forests for recreational purposes.

16. Definition of Forest Plantation

Forest Plantation is defined as an area planted with trees or forest vegetation, either from local or exotic species, using the open planting methods that are not less than 50 hectares wide. Forest Plantation can include an area located in within or outside from the Permanent Reserved Forest (PRF).

17. What are the suitable species planted for forest plantation crops?

The eight (8) species that have been identified and can be considered for forest plantation are Akasia (Acacia mangium), Batai (Paraserianthes falcataria), Binuang (Octomeles sumatrana), Getah (Hevea spp.), Teak (Tectona grandis), Khaya (Khaya ivorensis), Kelempayan (Neolamarckia cadamba), and Sentang (Azadirachta excelsa).

Among the impacts of forest fires on the environment are destruction of natural habitats, haze phenomenon, health problems and loss of forest biological diversity.

19. What is the purpose of the Guidelines on the Establishment of Forest Plantation?

The purpose of the Guidelines on the Establishment of Forest Plantation is to provide guidance on the management and establishment of forest plantations for reference to the Forestry Department and company/owner of forest plantations. However, these guidelines should not be considered as the ultimatum due to the requirements and possible changes from time to time in the management, establishment and maintenance of forest plantation from the development of technology.
