In Peninsular Malaysia, 3 genus were identified belong to this family which are Mops/Tadarida, Chaerephon and Cheiromeles. The signifikan findings of the new species of Otomops sp. during the Scientific Expedition on Forest Biological Diversity of Cameron Highlands which held on 20 to 25 May 2007 also added new genus record and species of this country. To date, only seven species of Otomops are known as Large-Eared Free-Tailed Bat Otomops martiensseni (from Central and South Africa; described in 1897), Otomops madagascariensis (from Madagascar; described in 1953) Otomops wroughtoni (from India and recently in 2001 recorded in Cambodia; described in 1913), Otomops papuensis (from Papua New Guinea; described in 1948), Otomops secundus (from Papua New Guinea; described in 1952), Otomops johnstonei (from Island of Alor, Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia; described in 1992) and Otomops formosus (from Java; described in 1939). All seven known species of Otomops were listed under the 2006 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and all of the known Otomops species from Asia were infrequently collected or captured.
