Paphiopedilum barbatum

Paphiopedilum barbatum, commonly known as slipper orchids, is an endemic orchid species to Peninsular Malaysia. During Gunung Berlumut Forest Biodiversity Scientific Expedition in Johore, this orchid has been found growing abundantly in the montane forest of the said area. Apart for its high market values, the beauty and uniqueness of this slipper orchid have become the desire of orchid enthusiasts.

Orchis of genus Paphiopedilum are considered highly collectible by orchid fanciers due to its unusual form of flowers. The genus is a member of the subfamily Cypripedioideae, commonly referred to as the “lady’s slipper” or “slipper orchids” due to the pouch-like labellum of the flower. The pouch traps insects that seek nectar on it florescence.
